December, 2011 (YORK, Maine) — Hospice of Yorkappointed Eric Redard to the position of Executive Director effective December 1st. Mr. Redard is filling the position previously held by Meredith “De
e” Bickmore who served in the position for 26 years until her sudden death in early September.
Mr. Redard brings a diverse background to his new position at Hospice of York. After graduating from UMaine, Redard’s career includes working in the non-profit sector for the most of his career, specializing in pastoral care, supervising volunteers, designing and implementing small group education opportunities, and motivating community development within the cities he has worked. He is also an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and has served several churches in Massachusetts. He was most recently the Health and Wellness Director for the Melrose Family YMCA.
“Hospice of York is so excited to have Eric as part of our team and believe he will be an intricate partner to increase the efforts in caring for individuals with life-limiting illnesses.” says Julie Perreault, President, Board of Directors of Hospice of York. “We could not have found a better fit.”
Working as a hospice chaplain in Portsmouth, NH., Redard was part of the team that went into people’s homes to give support to patients and families. “I was able to see the positive impact we could have on the families that were in our care. With the help of hospice, families can focus on what’s most important – enjoying life together and living the final seasons to their fullest. It’s about the quality of life.”
“There’s an inaccurate perception among many people that hospice means you’ve given up,” said Redard. “Those of us who have worked in the field have seen firsthand how hospice and palliative care can improve the quality of life. And there’s a growing amount of research showing that hospice and palliative care may prolong the lives of some people who receive care.”
Along with their work with end-of-life care, Hospice of York is beginning a new program which starts January 2012 called The Hope Project. This new program is for kids ages 3-18 who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Mr. Redard is very excited about the future of this new program. “I’m happy to see Hospice of York responding to a real need within our community”
